I bumped into Dave Wilson from Te Kōki at the Hautapu at work this morning (Matariki visible, just, through the mist and city half-light and then, all of a sudden, it was dawn and light and day). And he told me about Callum Allardice, and Allardice’s “Hotere”, a composition responding, and paying tribute, to Tuwhare’s poem. It’s the opening track to [The Rodger Fox Big Band plays Hone Tuwhare], and I’d half-remembered it from that performance but, in Allardice’s own hands, is something altogether stranger, more mysterious, enchanting, alive. I’ve been listening to it on repeat all morning since.
